Internet: even photos with 2 mega pixels are way too big for the internet and have to be reduced. If you create your own website or sell at online auctions, a simple compact digital camera will be good for you. Prints on photo paper: with 2 mega pixels, prints up to 13x18 centimeters are possible. With 3-5 mega pixel you can also zoom in and get reasonable prints up to 20x30 centimeters. There are several photo shops online where you can upload your pictures and order prints. However, cameras with 3-5 mega pixel will not be able to produce perfect picture quality. High quality photos: starting around 5 mega pixel the photo quality is no longer a question of resolution but of chip size, quality and optics (lenses). With good light, every brand name digital camera takes impressive photos. Compact cameras are very handy but here they have limitations.

Glossary

Image compression

Images are compressed in order to save data space efficiently. However compressions do often entail a reduced image quality.

Effective and Maximum Pixels

Whilst effective pixels are used to display an image, the remaining maximum amount of pixels out of a visible range are used for filtering the image. The deciding amount of pixels is thus the effective one, which should start at 300.000 for the normal consumer and at 690.000 pixels for the professional. The Amount of pixels is mostly given in millions (Mio).

Resolution

The resolution states the amount of single pixels of a digital image. The higher the resolution, the more details can be seen and the sharper the image seems. The resolving capacity of a digital camera essentially measured by the maximum possible printing size of the image, altough it can also take effect on the quality of the image. In reference to the resolution of affordable compact cameras manufactures use the terms "high"", "Superfine" or "standard" quite lightly, which often just relate to the strength of compression, not on the actual pixels in the image.
